C. BUSH, ruDimier Volume XXVIII No. 10 Feed Hogs Properly. 'There is no substitute for a feeding demonstration to show whether or not hogs are being grown at a profit" says Mr. W. WjShay, in charge of the ex tension work with swine in North i Carolina. Mr. Shay and his as sistant, Mr. J. M. Wats, have spent a large part of their time this year figuring out erood ra tions for hogs, making up the mixtures and arranging feeding schedules. By arranging these demonstrations with the local county agent, many farmers have seen the profits from feed ing and marketing their hogs properly. Mr. Shay finds that merely increasing the number of hogs without regard to feeding and disposing of the surplus will only multiply losses in some cases and so he is offering therservices of his office to those farmers who wish to put on a feeding demon stration with the view of later selling their surplus in coopera tive carlot shipments. This form of selling has permitted many growers with only a few hogs each to top the market this year. About fifty cars are in sight for next season and the number will grow as the boll weevil spreads. Plant fruit trees this fall in well prepared and enriched holes made for them. Plant only healthy, vigorous trees from re liable nurseymen. Prune tops and roots at planting. Your exhibit at the fair will help boost a community enter prise and will advertise your, " product. Advertising in : your local paper pays for the same two reasons. Another reason for cover crops: A fertile soil makes much better use of its rainfall than a poor one. If it costs as much to fight the boll weevil whether the cotton yields one bale or a third of a bale per acre, what's the answer? Build the soil. Every farm should have a name, and every farmer should have a business letterhead. It creates a good impression and is worth money. A good pasture means better milk means healthier children, healthier children means more powerful adults. Are you plan ting for your children? t Ripping up the cotton stalks before frost will send the weevil into winter quarters early and hungry. - :-- - Fifty to one hundred hens on eryfarm will afford a cash Jcome that is not to )e despised, f G.
